Goodbye Maurice or Steve
Written by: Robyn Hitchcock
Version 1 (1979-80 - studio demo)
Note on song identification: Back in 1980, bootlegs had appeared with a track listed only as "Unknown Title". Then in 1990, Hitchcock listed the unreleased songs from the Soft Boys' ill-fated second album. Among them was a track called "The 'D' Song". When "Goodbye Maurice or Steve" was eventually released, it matched "Unknown Title", thereby providing it with a name, and thanks to comments by Matthew Seligman, it was also revealed to be the same song as "The 'D' Song". As quoted on The Asking Tree, Seligman states, "That song called 'Goodbye Maurice or Steve' wasn't called that incidentally, we just used to call it 'D song' ... that was a song that got left behind simply because it didn't have a title. If it had, it would probably have ended up recorded properly."
