Robyn Hitchcock SONG-ography
What is a song-ography?
Like a discography, but instead of cataloging discs, it catalogs songs - the songs of Robyn Hitchcock. The songs are of course inseparable from the records and CDs, since that's how we come to have and know them, but it's the songs which matter to us most.
Compositions
We are interested in Hitchcock's own songs, so concentrate on these - including his co-writes. Cover versions will only be mentioned in passing.
Versions
Each song is given a version number. This is intended to indicate the sequence of recording (among the officially released versions only), not the order of release. So, a song from, say 1985 might have an earlier demo version issued years later. The demo is called "version 1" since it pre-dates the full recording.
The canon
We take a view that Hitchcock's canon consists of those songs which have been released legally in some tangible form. Promo releases are therefore included. We focus on the UK and US discographies where possible (with the UK normally taking precedence by default). Other overseas releases are only covered where they differ in substance from the UK, or where no equivalent UK release exists.
Album issues
Each new issue of a given album has an issue number (eg, "Element of Light issue 3"). A simultaneous edition on two formats (eg vinyl and CD) is all counted as the same issue, unless there is a notable difference between the two. We don't itemise cassette editions of albums generally available on disc (although we have a list of them).
Bootlegs
Boots are often interesting, and there are many of them, containing plenty of unreleased tracks. A survey is included (see "unreleased songs" from the menu, left) but this is far from complete, and we are only interested in finding new songs, not constructing a discography of illicit records, tapes and compact discs.
Accuracy
This site will forever be a work in progress as new material continues to be released. We want this site to be complete and accurate. If you see any errors or missing songs (and there are bound to be some) please contact us below - we will be grateful.
